Our Family Respite Service gives families the opportunity to spend quality time together away from their daily routine to refresh, re-energise and reconnect. Many families tell us that rare genetic conditions can put pressure on relationships, limit opportunities for positive shared experiences, and make getting out together feel difficult, whether due to accessibility challenges, the emotional energy needed to plan, or the financial pressures of disability-related costs.

Our respite experiences remove these barriers and make meaningful time together feel possible, helping families improve their day-to-day emotional well-being, strengthen relationships and build resilience for the long term.

There are three strands to this service:

1. Sandcastle Memories

Sandcastle Memories are free short breaks or special day trips for families. They are designed to help you step away from daily routines and make positive memories together. We provide a range of different options so that you can find the right fit for your family:

Where our caravans are geographically inaccessible, unsuitable for the size of a family, or unable to meet their specific accessibility requirements, we instead offer alternative short breaks with trusted  accessible holiday accommodation partners.

In England we work with Holistic Thinking Holidays.

In Scotland we work with Leuchie.

Special Day Trips and Annual Attraction Passes

  • Who this is for: Registered families/individuals
  • Can we/I receive this support more than once: No
  • Application needed: Yes
  • When/How can I apply? Registered families/individuals can apply at anytime via the application form here.

We know that overnight breaks away from home are not suitable for all families which is why families can choose instead to apply for an annual pass to a local attractions such as farms, zoos or steam railways or alternatively, a one-day visit to a bigger attraction, for example, a day at a Merlin theme park.

Donated short breaks

  • Who this is for: Registered families/individuals
  • Can we/I receive this support more than once: Yes
  • Application needed: Yes
  • When/How can I apply?  Opportunities will be shared with registered families in our newsletter and on our social media platforms.

From time to time, accessible holiday providers donate breaks to us. These stays are usually higher-value than those offered through our Sandcastle Memories programme and are often available at short notice following cancellations.

To ensure fairness, opportunities are shared with all registered families when they arise via our e-newsletter and social media channels. Everyone is invited to apply.

Families who have already received a Sandcastle Memory may apply again, but priority will normally be given to those who have not yet had a break.

Sandcastle Santa

  • Who this is for: Registered families/individuals
  • Can we/I receive this support more than once: Yes
  • Application needed: Yes
  • When/How can I apply? Eligible registered families will be invited to apply.

Sandcastle Santa is an annual programme. You may benefit more than once from a Sandcastle Santa day out (funding dependent). Applications are by invitation only, based on the funding available that year. If you are invited to apply, you can apply for a visit to see Santa at a local, accessible attraction, such as a garden centre, farm, zoo, theme park, steam railway, or National Trust property. If a Santa visit is not age or needs appropriate, we can also arrange other festive days out such as winter light displays or pantomimes at local theatres.
