Breaking Down Barriers to Breaks Appeal

Can you help us make the UK’s first truly accessible three bedroom caravan a reality for families living with rare genetic conditions?

What is the Breaking Down Barriers to Breaks Appeal about?

For those living with the challenges of rare genetic condition, and their families, a short break away is a simple way to help prevent burnout, ease pressure on relationships and create positive shared experiences -yet they often feel out of reach.

Most ‘affordable’ mainstream holiday accommodation is not accessible, and specialist providers are incredibly expensive. At the same time, many families are already under significant financial pressure due to facing additional costs that disability benefits don’t fully cover, while caring responsibilities can mean reducing hours or giving up work altogether.

As a result, many families go without a break.

Our Family Respite Service provides free accessible breaks, breaking down these barriers and providing families with the opportunity to spend quality time together away from their daily routine to refresh and support their wellbeing.

But we face a challenge:

Wheelchair accessible caravans typically only come as two-bedroom units. This means larger families often wait much longer for a break via our service, as their needs can only be met through far more expensive specialist accommodation.

We’re very close to changing that, but we need your help…

Together with some wonderful industry partners who have captured the vision, we have designed the UK’s first fully accessible three bedroom static caravan – created specifically for families like ours. It will feature:

Three bedrooms
Ceiling track hoist
Profiling bed
Wheel-under wash basin
Fold down changing table
Rise and fall kitchen counter tops

“Harper- Rose lives with a rare genetic condition called Spinocerebellar ataxia. Harper struggles a lot – when she was two she had open heart surgery and had a pacemaker fitted, she’s non verbal and cannot sit unaided or walk. Despite all this, she’s the happiest little girl!

I have four children and they all feel the impact of Harper’s condition on their daily life, as I do too – I cannot work as she needs care 24/7 and a lot of my time is focused on Harper and this is hard on the other children and puts a lot of strain on family time.

A holiday in accessible accommodation like this would be amazing for us all – just to be able to make memories and spend time together as a family somewhere that met Harper’s needs.  We can’t stretch to this ourselves and we are on The Sandcastle Trust’s waiting list as their current accessible caravans won’t accommodate our large family. Please donate and help make this larger, accessible lodge available for families like ours to have a much needed break ”
